Building Better Habits – One Step at a Time Series

We’ve all heard that little voice in our head:
“I’m not strong enough.”
“I can’t do this.”
“Everyone else is better than me.”

Negative self-talk can sneak in quickly — especially when you’re trying something challenging, like starting CrossFit. But here’s the truth: your thoughts shape your actions, and your actions shape your results.

At Starr Village CrossFit, we believe in building better habits not just in the gym, but in your mind. Here’s how you can start turning that inner critic into your biggest cheerleader.

🧠 Step 1: Catch It

The first habit to build is simply noticing when negative self-talk pops up. Awareness is powerful. Write it down or just pause to recognize it.

💡 Step 2: Reframe It

Instead of saying, “I can’t do this,” try:
➡️ “This is hard, but I can get better with practice.”
➡️ “I haven’t done this yet, but today is a chance to learn.”

This small shift turns defeat into determination.

🔄 Step 3: Pair It with Action

When that negative thought shows up, use it as a cue to take a small, positive action:
✅ Show up to class anyway.
✅ Ask Coach Kelvin for a scaling option that works for you.
✅ Focus on one rep at a time, instead of the entire workout.

Every time you act despite the negative thought, you weaken its power over you.

🏋️‍♀️ Step 4: Surround Yourself with Positivity

The Starr Village CrossFit community is one of the best tools to help you change your mindset. When you see others cheering you on and celebrating your wins, it’s easier to believe in yourself too.

🌱 The Habit of Positive Self-Talk

Like strength training, building a positive mindset takes practice. The more you do it, the easier it becomes — and soon you’ll notice you’re not just stronger in the gym, but more confident in your everyday life.
